Top-class thatching materials

When it comes to thatched roofs, we only use high-quality materials in all of our installations. Read on to find out more. Also, contact Howard Empson Thatching in Dorset for bespoke thatched roof installation services.

Wheat reed

Our lead man Howard only uses materials of the highest quality, hand selected and sourced locally where possible.

This is cut by a binder before the corn is mature, it is stoked in the fields and then brought in to be thrashed and combed. Once this is done it is ready for the thatcher to use.

Wheat reed has a more rounded and softer looking finish to the roof. It has a life span of 18-25 years.

Water reed

This is grown in reed beds, usually estuaries and rivers and it is a much longer tougher material. It has a lifespan of 25-40 years and creates a sharper, more angular finish.

We offer re-thatching and re-ridging services as well. Working out of Dorset, we serve clients across the region. Our team has over 17 years of experience in this trade. Rely on us for a fantastic job.
